APERTURE AND DEPTH OF FIELD

As described in Section 4.1, the aperture controls the size of the opening of the camera lens, which means it controls the amount of light received by the sensor. The higher the so-called f-number, the less light falls on the sensor. Another photographic phenomenon that can be adjusted by means of the aperture is the so-called depth of field. This is the area between the area in focus and the out-of-focus area of a photograph. 

The larger the depth of field, the more areas in the photo are depicted in focus. By playing with the value of the aperture, you can therefore bring a certain focus to a photo, for example by blurring the background.
