Chapter 5 | General knowledge

5.3 | STEERING SURFACES

In order to steer an aircraft in various directions and altitudes, the aircraft is equipped with control surfaces. These so-called 'rudders' provide movement around three axes. Moving the aircraft around one of these axes works differently for an aircraft with wings than for an aircraft with a rotor.

5.3.1 | STEERING SURFACES FOR FIXED-WING UNMANNED AIRCRAFT

  • The ailerons provide the longitudinal axis rolling motion. This movement is called rolling.
  • The elevator rotates around the lateral axis. This movement is called pitching.
